Want to know what foods to avoid when you have asthma? Asthma is an ailment that results in breathing difficulty after tissue in the air passages of the lung are swollen. Symptoms can include whezing, breath shortness and coughing. Food-triggered asthma is uncommon but posible. Read below to find out what foods can affect asthma in a variety of ways.

Step 1: If you or a loved one has asthma, ask around to your friends and family to see if they know anyone, and have any knowledge about the correlations between diet and asthma. Don’t rely on what they tell you though; a doctor should always be consulted to verify this information.

Step 2: Any foods that contain additives benzoates, sulphites and gallates can cause a problem with those who suffer from asthma.

Step 3: Cider, wine and beer also should be kept away from. Foods that have yeast or mold like bread and blue cheeses also should be avoided. Certain colorings also can affect these patients. These include E102, E104 and E110.

Step 4: Cow’s milk, wheat cereals, eggs, fish, soy and nuts, more so peanuts, should typically be avoided.

  • There also are foods to eat that can help. Coffee, due to its caffeine, can help control how severe an asthma attack is.
  • Spicy foods like chili, hot mustard, garlic and onion can dilate air passageways. They do so by stimulating nerves, which creates a watery fluid in the mouth, throat and lungs.
