One of the most exciting experiences imaginable is bringing home a new dog, especially one as cute as a Pomeranian, but there are responsibilities that come with canine ownership.  Rest assured, the rewards of owning a Pom definitely are greater than the work that goes into it.  Follow these steps to learn how to be a successful Pomeranian owner.

Step 1: Be sure to train your dog!  A properly trained dog will be a welcome family member and also strangers will want to become friends with your pet.  Often owners do not train their pets and wonder why they do not listen to them.  Untrained dogs are not bad, they just need some direction.

Step 2: Training is more than teaching your dog tricks, although that is a benefit.  A trained dog is obedient and comes to the owner’s side.  The Pomeranian who is well-trained will not be a nuisance to those coming into your home, and training will bond you with your pet. You will be the master.  Advice can be sought from professionals in this area.

Step 3: Take your dog to the veterinarian for regular checkups.   Also, consider putting up a fence if you do not have one, and keep the doors closed so that your Pom cannot run away. You want your pet to be healthy and live a long life!  With that being said, make your Pom’s environment safe by removing small objects your pet could ingest.  Keep up with your dog’s dental hygiene to avoid bacterial buildup that can result in other health problems.

  • If a fire or some other emergency occurs, arrange for someone to rescue your pet if you are not there.
