Sunspots are parts of the skin that seem to be lighter or darker than normal after a session in the sun. But what causes these spots to appear and how do you get rid of sunspots? Tinea versicolor, a fungus, causes one type of sunspot, while excess exposure to the sun causes another.
Step 1: If you know anyone who has had sunspots, ask them how they got rid of the issue. Do some research on sunspots to come up with some ideas before your next beach vacation.
Step 2: Some treatments to get rid of sunspots can include herbal, over-the-counter and prescription medications. It all depends on how you want to handle it. Do know that it can be up to a month before you notice any changes after the treatments, and the fungus could reappear on that type of sunspot.
Step 3: Those spots caused by too much sun are referred to as solar lentigines, or age or liver spots. They look like dark, flat discolorations. Try to stay out of the sun for extensive periods of time. Treatments for excessive sun related spots include skin-bleaching products, which you can get either over the counter or with a prescription. These treatments can take from three weeks to six months to show effect. Also, freezing and laser treatments can be used.
Tips
- If you think you might have this ailment, visit a dermatologist to determine what kind it is and the best way to treat it. If your sunspot seems to change in appearance, such as its size, shape or color, schedule an examination with your physician.
