Dry mouth is an unpleasant ailment that can lead to sores, bad breath, difficulties in swallowing as well as dental problems. It is treatable, though. So how do you get rid of dry mouth? Follow the instructions below to better oral and overall health.
Step 1: This is a problem that at least one of your friends or family members has suffered from. Ask around to your loved ones for some advice, and see what they have done to treat dry mouth problems. Try some of these techniques. If nothing seems to work, and you are still a bit dry in the mouth, follow the below steps.
Step 2: Drink a healthy supply of water, sugar-free juice and milk during the day. Milk will coat your food as you eat it. Also chew sugar-free gum and eat sugar-free hard candy. A pattern is forming in that you don’t want to have too much sugar.
Step 3: Moisturize your lips with balm. This will keep your mouth from forming sores in its corners.
Step 4: If cooking with sauces that do not contain tomatoes, gravy or butter, add a broth.
Step 5: Breathe through your nose more, and sleep with a humidifier or vaporizer in the same room. The added moisture will help if you breathe with your mouth open, and it also will soothe the throat.
Step 6: Eat and drink healthfully. Do not drink alcohol or beverages rich in caffeine or acidic juices like tomato, grapefruit and orange. Try to limit your salt intake as well, and stay away from cigarettes and other forms of tobacco. Also, avoid mouthwashes with alcohol or peroxide.
Tips
- As dry mouth can lead to dental issues, make sure to brush your teeth after each meal with a fluoride toothpaste and soft toothbrush. Using good dental hygiene will reduce some of the effects of dry mouth. Also floss at least once per day, preferably before going to bed.
- Also use your toothbrush on your tongue. This will help with bad breath. Rinse and gargle with a fluoride mouthwash as well.
- Go to the dentist at least twice per year. If you are taking any medication, tell your dentist because the drugs can cause dry mouth. Also, ask your doctor about artificial saliva products that might be available over-the-counter. They come available in sprays, rinses or moisturizing gels.
