Oh no!!! Johnny spit his gum on the carpet! Call the Rug Doctor! These are the thoughts that may have gone through your head about 5 minutes ago before you got online to look for a solution. Don’t worry, getting gum out of your carpet doesn’t have to be such a difficult task…unless you have lime green shag carpet that you installed yourself in 1972…in which case I can’t really help you.
Step 1 - Chill Out
Literally. The first thing that you want to do is grab an ice pack or even some frozen peas. You can also use a zip lock bag filled with ice for this. When gum is warm it is incredibly sticky. When it freezes, it becomes hard and brittle. You’re going to want to leave the ice over the gum for about 15-20 minutes until you can easily work with it.
Step 2 - Grease Up Your Elbows
No, not literally this time. Try and pull as much of the gum out as you can with your hands. Depending on the type of carpet that you have, some stubborn pieces can be removed with a spoon or even tweezers. If necessary, repeat step one a couple times since the gum doesn’t stay cold for long.
Step 3 - Clean Up Your Johnny’s Mess
Once you get all the gum out of the carpet, you may want to clean the area with some carpet cleaner or mild detergent. If you have a dog, you can also use a little peanut butter for the remaining bits. Peanut butter has a way of dissolving gum. Once you are done with the peanut butter, call Fido over and he should take care of the rest. Remember, it is Fido’s duty to lick the gum from the carpet, not Johnny’s.
