How to Fix Dents in Guitars

If you’ve recently suffered a ding on your prized ax and are wondering how to fix dents in guitars, this short article will hopefully be of some assistance. While my opinion on the matter is leave it be, I understand why some would want to correct the imperfection. Keep in mind though, that dings add character to your guitar and a repair may or may not change the tone.

The easiest way that I’ve seen for repairing guitar dents is using superglue, sandpaper, and stain. Simply fill in the ding with several layers of superglue, and let it dry. Then, carefully sand the surface so the patch and normal area are flush and stain.

Another thing that you can do is “sweat” out the dent. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow:

  1. Clean out any finish from the inside of the ding
  2. Grab a soldering iron and heat it up
  3. Dampen a clean soft towel thoroughly with water
  4. Place the damp cloth over the ding, then apply the soldering iron
  5. The steam will cause the wood on your guitar to swell and help take out the dent
  6. After this process is completed, you can restain and lacquer the repaired area
