Nothing signals the coming of summer like fresh watermelon. Slightly chilled or straight from the patch, watermelon is a summer treat that few people don’t love. The only problem is…those pesky seeds! Sure, you can find “seedless” watermelons at your local supermarket, but they aren’t really seedless are they? No! The food scientists just turned the seeds from thick and dark to skinny and light…but they are still seeds! So, lets get those seeds out and start enjoying some melon.
Here is the method that I successfully use to remove the seeds:
Shake And Drop
This method is one that my grandmother has been using for decades. I refer to this as the “shake and drop” method. First, you will need to cut your watermelon into slices or chunks. Second, find a large enough plastic container for your watermelon pieces. This method works best when there is plenty of wiggle room inside. The more cramped the melon, the less effective this method will be.
- Lightly shake the container from side to side and from top to bottom - this will cause many of the looser seeds to fall right out.
- Gently drop the container onto a hard floor or counter top - Many seeds that did not fall off from shaking will detach when dropped. Experiment with this step a bit. Try adding more pressure, dropping from higher points, etc.
If there are any seeds left attached, they will be much easier to work with while eating. You can even cut the pieces into smaller ones, cutting around the seeds.
Helpful Tips
- After you have dropped the container a few times, open it up and flip the slices. This will help free up the opposite side.
- Use a melon ball scoop. These neat little gadgets make it very easy to work around the seeds. Place all the melon balls into a container and you will have nice bite size snacks at your disposal
Good luck!
