Choosing a place to live can be one of the toughest decisions we ever make.  We want to reside in a place that makes us happy and contributes to a healthy lifestyle.  There are many things to consider when searching for a new town.  This article will provide a few tips to help you with your search.

What kind of work to you do?

A very important thing to consider is your career.  Are you looking for a place that has many opportunities within your field?  If you are an organic farmer, it makes no sense to seek out an apartment in the middle of a large city.  Research the job market in your potential city to see if it will be a good fit.

What kind of weather do you enjoy?

Weather is known to be a huge contributer to a person’s happiness.  Some people love cold winters and some want 75 degree sunny weather every day of the year.  You should spend some time watching the Weather Channel or checking weather averages online.  If you already know that you hate hot weather, then it makes no sense to move to Florida…you will likely be unhappy.

What is the cost of living?

You want to live in an area where your income lasts until the end of the month.  If you don’t want to be in continuous stress over money, you should avoid cities that are very financially demanding.  You can search through US census data to get a feel for costs of living, average salaries, and home prices.

Will you be living alone or with family?

There are many cities that cater to single people with quick lifestyles, and many that cater to families.  If you are looking for a city with great schools for your child, or a city that is very dog friendly,  you will be able to find plenty that meet your needs.

Overall Tips

During your search for a new place to live, you should make a big list of questions.  Start with the above and expand with other important questions to you.  Here are some additional questions that you can research:

  • Is there good public transportation?
  • Are there trails and outdoor activities?
  • What is the level of crime?
  • Are there many entertaining activities?
  • etc, etc.

Once you have made a list of questions, start searching.  Search engines are a great starting point.  You can also browse sites like Wikipedia, City Data, US Census, and online job boards to get a feel for each city.  You can also call a city’s tourism department and request more information.  Good luck!
