Nothing can ruin someone’s day quite like a speeding ticket. But don’t pay the fine until you go to court, because you might be able to get out of the ticket. There are certain steps that should be taken that can improve your chances of not having to pay the fine.  Read below to find out how to beat a speeding ticket!

Step 1: Brainstorm!

Brainstorm for ideas. Do you have any friends or family that got out of a speeding ticket? Heed their advice, or simply do some research on the matter with others to find tips to get out of this quandary.

Step 2: Question the Officer

When you are cited for speeding, make sure to question the officer. Giving a statement is fine, but if you leave it at that, it looks like you are presuming guilt for speeding.

Step 3:  Pay Attention

Look at what the officer wrote on the ticket and carefully listen to what he says in court. For example, if he estimated anything on the ticket, you can have him describe the entire process. If he was guessing distances for the speed you were traveling, this could be inaccurate.

Step 4: Court Tips

As the officer testified his case, make sure he uses your maps, charts and pictures to present the information to the court.

Step 5: Write Down Questions

Write your questions down on paper and as you ask them, speak slowly and articulately. The judge or officer might catch you by surprise, but it is important to stay in a calm mental state.

Step 6: Summarize Discrepacies for Judge

You will give the judge a summary of any discrepancies on the ticket and what the officer testified in court. You will need to impress the judge with your preparation and performance in order to be dismissed of your charges.

Tips

  • Politeness is key - say “thank you” and “good morning” to the judge and officer. It doesn’t hurt to be on their good side.
