A colonoscopy is an exam that uses a fiber optic camera or small ccd camera to inspect the colon for unusual polyps or ulcerations. Many patients feel that the procedure is very invasive, and fear the trip to the doctor to have it done.

Most experts agree that people should get tested starting at the age of 50. If you are at higher risk for colorectal cancer and other abnormalities, you should begin getting tested at age 40. For normal patients older than 50, the optimal time between each colonoscopy should be 3-4 years. Waiting too long between each screening poses a threat, since polyps and ulcerations can develop quite quickly.

In order for the colonoscopy to be performed correctly, the colon must be free of any solid foods. Because of this, patients are required to go on a special diet in preparation for the screening, which generally takes 1-2 days. Plan on staying home, since you will be cleaning out your colon and making frequent bathroom breaks. Clear fluids are paramount in this diet, and definitely low fiber.

For people who are intimidated by the standard colonoscopy procedure, there is a newer, non-invasive test called the . Keep in mind, this test is still under investigation, and it’s effectiveness when compared to the standard procedure is still unclear.

Good luck, and remember that your long term health is far more valuable and important than the embarasement and discomfort of receiving a colonoscopy.
